Saving Lives in Custody Campaign – Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego

Joint Campaign

Saving Lives in Custody (SLIC) Campaign

A joint advocacy initiative by the North County Equity & Justice Coalition (NCEJC) and the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego (RJCSD).

Joint Initiative

Campaign Mission & Core Goals

The Saving Lives in Custody (SLIC) campaign was created by the North County Equity & Justice Coalition (NCEJC) in collaboration with the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego (RJCSD).

San Diego County detention facilities have recorded some of the highest in-custody fatality rates in the State of California. This campaign demands immediate structural reforms, independent medical and mental health care, transparent oversight, and accountability to prevent further loss of life in custody.

Key Demands of the SLIC Campaign

  • Independent Medical Care: Establishing non-law enforcement medical professionals inside detention facilities.
  • De-escalation & Mental Health First: Diverting individuals experiencing mental health crises away from incarceration and into treatment.
  • Transparent Fatality Investigations: Mandating immediate public release of full video recordings and independent oversight reports for all in-custody deaths.
